In 1976, Bruce joined the California Conservation Corps, working with youth at various locations throughout the state. In 1985, Bruce was hired by former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Mickey Kantor, to be part of a team to create the LA Conservation Corps. Bruce served as the organization’s Executive Director from 1995-2014. After 30 years Bruce left the LA Corps when he was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown Director of the California Conservation Corps in September, 2015.

Bruce serves on the Boards of the Little Tokyo Senior Nutrition Program, LA League of Conservation Voters, LA County Beaches Commission, RiverLA and Friends of Manzanar.

Bruce was awarded a Durfee Sabbatical Award and received the 2013 Spirit of Los Angeles Award in honor of his many years of dedicated service to the youth of Los Angeles. In June 2014, LA’s Environmental Charter High School was renamed the Saito Academy in his honor.
