Watts Century Latino Organization
Sabbatical, 2007

Arturo Ybarra founded the Watts/Century Latino Organization (WCLO) in 1990 and served as its Executive Director for 32 years. WCLO is the only Latino multicultural nonprofit organization specifically serving Latinos and African-Americans in South LA, despite Latinos making up more than half of the residents in the area. Long known for his ability to work well with both the Latino and African-American communities, Arturo was a tireless organizer and activist focused on housing, violence prevention, education reform, and environmental justice. WCLO hosts an annual Multicultural Cinco de Mayo Celebration that honors the rich ethnic diversity of Watts.

* Arturo passed away in July, 2023.
